Bathroom Hardware Finishes: How to Specify Chrome, Brushed Gold and Matte Black

Chrome: versatile and familiar

Chrome remains a widely used bathroom finish because it works with many interior styles and creates a clean reflective appearance.

It is often suitable for:

• apartments

• hotels

• residential bathrooms

• commercial washrooms

• projects requiring a neutral finish

Its reflective surface can make water spots and fingerprints more visible, so regular cleaning is usually important where appearance standards are high.

For large projects, Chrome can also be relatively easy to coordinate visually because it is widely available across different bathroom product categories.

Brushed Gold and warm metallic finishes

Warm metallic finishes can create a more residential, hospitality or premium visual character.

They work particularly well with:

However, one project issue is especially important: “Brushed Gold” is not a universal colour standard.

The challenge is consistency.

A black faucet, shower enclosure frame and accessory may look similar individually but show differences when installed side by side.

Cleaning products should also be selected carefully according to the manufacturer's instructions, as aggressive chemicals or abrasive cleaning may damage some decorative finishes.

Do not specify finish only by colour name

A project specification should ideally record more than: Finish: Gold

Where possible, confirm:

• supplier

• product series

• finish name or code

• approved physical sample

• reference photograph

• which product categories must match

For larger developments, an approved material board or sample set can avoid significant inconsistencies during procurement.

Coordinate all visible hardware early

A common project mistake is to select faucets first and accessories later.

By the time shower enclosures, door hardware or bathroom accessories are ordered, the original finish may no longer match exactly.

A better sequence is to establish the overall hardware direction early:

1. faucet and shower finish

2. shower enclosure frame/hardware finish

3. accessories

4. door handles and related nearby hardware where visual coordination matters

This creates a more controlled final result.

Consider maintenance and usage

The most attractive finish in a showroom is not always the best choice for every operational environment.

For high-use bathrooms such as hotels, serviced apartments and commercial facilities, consider:

• cleaning frequency

• maintenance procedures

• water quality

• exposure to chemicals

• ease of replacement

• availability of matching components

The final decision should balance aesthetics with long-term use.

Before approving a project finish

Confirm:

• interior material palette

• faucet and shower finish

• shower enclosure finish

• accessories finish

• sample approval

• quantity

• project location

• required delivery date
